When Solid Values Driven Alliances are replaced with Loose Transactional Alliances the West No longer has an Edge/Power to Compete - It's Ability to Influence is Impaired
The focus on building the Great Wall of Europe is part of the problem NOT the solution
Military power alone is not sufficient to set you apart from your foe, so turning your back on "soft power" that's founded on firm values is indeed changing the world at many levels and sadly in ways that devastate the so called "western alliance". When arrogance and complacency kick-in one is no longer in charge of his/her destiny and same applies in the world of geopolitics. The only way out of this mess would be initiate efforts for rapid re-assessment/re-alignment of strategy (NOT reactionary politics) otherwise the downward political/economic and security trajectory continues with consequences more felt than before (kinda like the situation with climate change - slow incremental change followed by increasing patterns of extreme weather conditions that affect life on this planet, and not just considering economic ramifications). So in many ways the focus on "Immigration" is becoming more of a distraction when the issue of the day should be Geopolitical Re-Alignment (reviving core western values, developing solid value driven alliances [as opposed to transactional ones] and re-instating "soft power" and foreign aid programs as important/critical tools of influence for the new/focused strategy. Insist on talking "immigration", OK, here's a thought; "immigration" is a symptom not the root cause; where the root cause is - as I mention frequently - poor foreign policy and declined interest in core values. So for the German government - and here I use it just as an example - I'd say good luck with your new "border controls" policy that's getting you excited, but I have to tell you that security begins with pragmatic policies that reach far beyond your borders otherwise we'll all be building high walls/fences around our homes; the Great Wall of Europe may sound comforting but it produces opposite results. So STOP blindly following rather than challenging the Far Right agenda on this subject-there is a viable/effective alternate vision for this problem. Perhaps a better starting point for the German government would be assessing how valuable their allies are and whether they are indeed driven by same value system and/or interests. To sum up, when one is confused it's very likely their perception of realities & interests will produce unpredictable harm, so the first step is to remove any distortions to your vision then reset your priorities and follow the guiding path of your values; that'll help.
